BAGGAGE CLAIM @tokyoartbookfair (23.11.23-26.11.23)
Curated by Elise By Olsen

The suitcases are filled with artist’s books, from archival material to new commissions, in various formats and sizes, functioning as booths within the booth at Tokyo Art Book Fair 2023. With contributions by: Bjarne Melgaard, Borgenheim Rosenhoff (Marius Engh), Frida Orupabo, Guttormsgaard Arkiv (Hans Hamid Rasmussen), Joar Nango, Lord Jim Publishing (Jan Freuchen), Maria Pasenau, Terje Nicolaisen and Victor Boullet.

The romantic-comedy was to the early 2000s what the action-comedy was to the early nineties: light-hearted fun offered to the big audiences for a good ol' innocent laugh! Seeing that fashion these days tends to look like something found in between these two periods - the corner bricks of the Y2K - the tagline of the rom-com "Baggage Claim" (2013) could serve as a point of departure for reading this year’s Norwegian contribution to Tokyo Art Book Fair: "She's done flying solo"!

Curator Elise By Olsen invited nine Norwegian artists to pack nine suitcases to freight in a freezing fuselage across the North Pole and reach Tokyo before Christmas. Will they make it? With a nod to the harmless surface of both the romantic comedy and the action comedy, and a conscious glance to the incoming ecological and migration crisis, these nine trolleys travel with aptitude (and altitude) to give their humble nod to what an artist book can be in 2023. Duty free!
